5 Abaya Hacks for Muslim Women

5 Abaya Hacks for Muslim Women

Assalamu Alaikum my lovelies!

I was inspired to write this post after talking to a sister who just started wearing abayas full time. I started wearing abayas in 2017 when I wanted to truly follow the words of God and put more of an effort into obeying the rulings of the hijab that are according the Qur’an. Having gained experience over time I have picked up some ‘hacks” that I think any muslimah that is on that same path would find useful.

These are just a few tips I have discovered over the years that I am happy to share with all of you!

1. Clingy Abayas

I have an issue in the fall and winter months with constant staticky abayas. This usually happens because of the material of the abaya rubbing against the material of my leggings that are worn under my abaya.

Walking around with the abaya clinging to the lower half of my body is the most uncomfortable and annoying issue to deal with. I am sure it is equally annoying to anyone who is out with me because I am constantly asking for assistance to pull the abaya down and out away from my body.

It was a huge pet peeve for me until I started using static guard! I don’t know why this didn’t even occur to me before. It was a smack to the forehead. I’ve used this on clothes before but why it didn’t occur to me to use it for this particular reason is beyond me!

All I do is spray the bottom of my leggings (while wearing them), then turn my abaya inside out and lay it flat and spray the bottom half of the abaya.

I have not had one issue with clingy abayas since this hack! Give it a try and let me know if this works for you. I swear by it!

2. Wrinkly abayas

If you’re like me, you'd probably come home and throw your abaya on the nearest surface. I am terrible about hanging up my abaya to keep them crisp and ready for the next use. This just leaves me with an abaya so wrinkled it looks like it has just been through a hurricane. I had tried wrinkle-release sprays before, and unfortunately, they either didn’t work, or they left staining on certain fabrics. This is why I always highly recommend a portable steamer!

A portable steamer is great when you don’t want to wait for an iron to heat up or you can’t use an iron on specific fabrics. My steamer takes no time at all and is a quick and effective way of getting wrinkles out faster.

Honestly, sometimes I pick a day of the week and just steam abayas and I scold myself for being so careless in the first place, lol!

3. Hair be gone

Who doesn’t have the urge to squeeze animals as soon as you lay your eyes on them? I love to cuddle my cat, Sir Andrew.  He is a beautiful tabby cat and he sheds terribly. I still love my cuddles and for this, I am grateful for lint rollers!

Not everyone loves cat hair, so I am always cautious about running a lint roller over my abaya before going to the masjid.

4. For my short girls

If you are blessed to be height challenged like me (5’1”, yay!), buying abayas can be a challenge. While some abaya companies go by height, they also go by bust size, and sometimes the two don’t do you any justice. Especially if you’re a breastfeeding mom.. if you know, you know!

I am not a fan of heels. They hurt and make too much noise. But I am obsessed with platform or chunky shoes. This winter I have lived in boots with a 2-3” sole. Not only are they great in the snow, but they give me a lift, so my abayas are not dragging on the ground and getting filthy.

In the summertime, I live in my TOM’s wedge shoes for the same reason. I love lighter colors in the summer, but I was always afraid of them turning brown at the bottom from touching the ground. But this gives me just enough height so the hem is no longer dragging on the ground.

5. Wide sleeves

Wide sleeve abayas were trending in 2021. They were everywhere. You all know exactly which abayas I am talking about.. we all bought at least one. They are extremely comfortable but the sleeves are a nuisance sometimes because your arms could be exposed if you don’t have a long sleeve underneath.

One of the things I love about abayas is that it doesn’t involve a lot of layering. But with these abayas it was a must.. until, that is, I started using hijab magnets! They looked like cute little cufflinks but for your abaya (someone should invent something like this, seriously.) and they prevented my arms from being exposed. .null

These are just a few tips to share but I would love to hear from you! What tips do you have and would like to share with other sisters who are new to the abaya team?
